I was recently on a tour of Fredericksburg National Cemetery and at one of the stops the ranger pointed out the grave of a USCT. He was a slave at Chatham who had escaped and joined the 1st USCC. When the ranger stated that over 180,000 African Americans served the Union cause, some people in the crowd gasped.
