Redkey</title><summary type='text'>I was saddened to learn recently that Dr. Edwin S. Redkey died on June 10th at the age of 79.

Dr. Redkey was the editor of the classic work A Grand Army of Black Men: Letters from African-American Soldiers in the Union Army, 1861-1865 (1992), a book which inspired Noah Andre Trudeau to write his book Like Men of War: Black Troops in the Civil War, 1862-1865 (1998). ﻿ In the opening chapter of Elizabeth Leonard’s new book Men of Color to Arms!: Black Soldiers, Indian Wars, and the Quest for Equality, the author makes the following statement: “In the course of their military service, more than a dozen soldiers of the USCT earned the Congressional Medal of Honor” (p.8).

Thus was described the Battle of Olustee, fought on February 20, 1864, by a quick-witted officer in Co. K, 7th Connecticut Infantry. While the battle itself was not one of the finer military exploits produced by the Union war effort during the American Civil War, it did display the fighting prowess of the African American soldiers who fought there.
